VEGETABLE PATCH - TIPS & ADVICE

Planting: 22.04.07 & 02.05.07

Dwarf French Green Beans

Cultivation: Keep moist. Water copiously when plants are flowering.

Harvesting: pick young beans. Plant will produce more beans after being picked. 

Runner Beans

Cultivation:  Keep moist. Pinch out tips when they climb to top of support. Water copiously when plants are flowering.

Harvesting: Pick beans as soon as ready. Picking beans will promote further bean production.

Sprouting Broccoli

Cultivation: water in dry spells. harvesting: pick springs when the buds are formed. Don’t let them flower because this will stop the production.

Cauliflower

Cultivation: Water well during dry spells.

Harvesting: harvest as soon as ready

Cabbage

Cultivation: Water well during dry spells.

Harvesting: Harvest as soon as the heart of the cabbage is solid.

Carrots

Cultivation: Maintain low but constant level of moisture.

Harvesting: Water soil before easing carrots out of soil with a garden fork.

Beetroot

Cultivation: Shouldn’t get too wet or too dry. Keep constant moisture.

Harvesting: Loosed soil with a fork to prevent damage and then gently pull out .Harvest when size is between golf and tennis ball.

Tomato

Cultivation: Feed with liquid fertiliser on weekly basis. Keep well watered.

Harvesting: Pick as tomatoes ripen.

Courgette

Cultivation: Pinch out tips when they climb to top of support Feed with liquid feed approximately every couple of weeks. Keep well watered. 

Harvesting: Harvest by cutting fruit off with a sharp knife.

Chilli Peppers

Cultivation :Keep well watered. Feed with liquid feed weekly.

Harvesting: Pick when fruit is green to encourage more to come.

Rocket

Cultivation: Keep watered in dry weather. harvesting: Pick young leaves or cut off top of the plant.  Leaves will resprout after cutting.

Giant Red Mustard

Cultivation: Keep well watered. harvesting: Pick or cut according to needs.

Lettuce

Cultivation: Keep well watered. : Cut away loose-leaf types as needed. Cut headed lettuce when they feel solid and appear to have a heart.

Spinach

Cultivation: Don’t let spinach dry out. Give liquid feed every two weeks. Harvesting: Pick outside leaves. Don’t take more than 50% of plant to let it recover.

Mizuna

Cultivation: Keep well watered.

Harvesting: To keep supply of young leaves foe many months harvest every day.

Rhubarb & Rainbow Chard

Cultivation: Keep moist.

Harvesting: Break or cut off the outer leaves, as needed leaving the rest behind. Try to avoid damaging the inner leaves.

Onions

Cultivation: Keep well watered until established. After that only water when they start to wilt.

Harvesting: Lift bulbs when foliage dies back.

Spring Onions

Cultivation: Water in dry periods.

Harvesting: Pull them as required.

Potatoes

Cultivation: Keep moist but not too wet. If weather is very dry drench every couple of weeks.

Harvesting: When flowers open potatoes are ready.
